Melburnians were coming to terms with the short, sharp shock of the city's coldest morning of the year this morning as snow fell on Canberra and in regional NSW.The Bureau of Meteorology said the average early morning temperature of three degrees celsius was fairly typical for the year."But it's a bit of a shock to the system, a sharp change from the warm, mild autumn and May that we had," forecaster Phil King said.Overnight, the temperature in metropolitan areas dipped to zero degrees while at Yarra Glen on the edge of the Dandenong Ranges, the mercury slipped to minus two degrees.Melbourne's coldest day on record was in June 1866, when temperatures dropped to minus two degrees, Mr King said. Meanwhile, residents on the outskirts of NSW regional centres of Katoomba, Lithgow and Bathurst have reported the first snowfalls of winter. There have also been some falls around Canberra, which augurs well for the NSW ski season.A fair dusting has coated the Brindabella ranges to the capital city's east, with some falls also reported over the border with NSW at Bungandore and Captain's Flat to the east of Queanbeyan. Victoria's ski resorts plan to open more lifts for the weekend after fresh snow fell overnight. Mt Buller spokeswoman Jacqui Whitby said snow in the snowmaking areas was 50 cm deep with dry powder. "We're expecting a lot of people up here on the weekend to get their first tracks of the season," Ms Whitby said. She said the Skyline and Wombat chairlifts will run this weekend, opening a significant amount of new terrain at Little Buller. At Falls Creek the overnight temperature was minus 5.6 degrees Celsius and this morning the alpine resort was coated with another four cm of fresh snow. The resort will open the Drover's Dream, Monkey Bar and Eagle chairlifts this weekend to add to the beginner and intermediate runs already operating. At Mt Hotham, the snow is 23 cm deep and the Big D, Summit Quad and Trainer lifts are open for skiing and boarding on a fair to good fresh over packed groomed snow cover. The Village loop lift is expected to open by the weekend.
I live in Melbourne, and thank God we have the heater on in the morning. Everything outside turned to ice. But hey, I love the cold weather
